BULGARIA, SOFIA

Dear friends and colleagues,
Unfortunately, on Sunday (29 July 2012) the 59-years-old Roma victim of the bomb attack which took place a month earlier in the town of Sandanski, died from his injuries in the Military Medical Academy of Sofia, Bulgaria. Malin Iliev was buried in his hometown Sandanski, today (31 July 2012).
Four young men of Bulgarian ethnic origin were arrested by the Police authorities for the bomb attack in Sandanski, all of them belong to a local Nationalistic group. While the leading world news agencies were concerned about the terrorist attack against the Israeli tourists at the Burgas airport, they remained silent regarding the Anti-Roma terrorism in Bulgaria which is escalating after the Katunica pogroms last year.
It is clear that Roma need a Strategy, but Strategy for Survival in a situation of growing Anti-Ziganism in Europe.

This is the letter I sent to NatGeo a couple of months ago.  It got no response
National Geographic’s intention to air the program American Gypsies later this month has come as a blow to the entire Romani American population and is a disappointing reflection on a society committed to education that has been an international institution for so many years.  Stimulated by the recent media attention being paid to “Gypsies,” this has all the earmarks of a sensation-for-profit venture at the expense of the people involved.

Dozens of Roma rights groups protested in front of the French Embassy in Bucharest, Romania, on Monday holding up banners saying: “Stop Sarkozy, Stop expulsions" and "Roma are European citizens." Similar protests took place across many cities in Europe during the weekend.
Traumatized Roma have condemned the recent expulsions of Roma immigrants from France to Romania and Bulgaria. In July, the French government ordered a crackdown against thousands of Roma living in makeshift camps across France.
French union activists, human rights supporters, and anti-racist organizations started a one-week protest last Saturday, declaring opposition to Sarkozy’s recent plans for a new pension reform and the newly adopted security measures.

Podgorica, It was the only home Selija Hisenaj knew since she was forced out of war-torn Kosovo 13 years ago, and now it's gone too.
The Rroma People in Europe
The 30-year-old mother of seven is among hundreds of Roma, or Gypsies, from Kosovo who are living in tents after a fire burned down their settlement on the outskirts of the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica.
Officials said Wednesday that some 850 people lost their belongings in the fire that swept through the refugee barracks in the suburb of Konik a day earlier. No one was injured in Tuesday's fire, but for some it was still too much.

"We should have stayed and burned as well," said Hisenaj, who fled from the Kosovo village of Istok during the 1998-99 war. "I lost everything."

Gypsies and Travellers look for more political clout

New guest blogger, Mike Glover, reports on how the communities are seeking to gain more autonomy over their lives through politics
A new pressure group that represents the views of Gypsies and the travelling community is hoping to lobby the main political parties at Westminster.
Representatives from a number of existing organisations are getting together to try to mobilise their community to use its votes at local and national elections, above all to protect their way of life.

How EBRD support enabled Belgrade, Serbia to become role model for social inclusion of Roma community

A recycling centre that earned Serbia’s capital Belgrade a top award from the Council of Europe for promoting social inclusion of Roma people was brought into the limelight by the visit of a high-profile international delegation.

The group, headed by the UN’s Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and including the EBRD’s Acting Director for Serbia, Ian Brown, visited the centre that transformed Belgrade into a distinguished role model for addressing the challenges that face the Roma community.
The EBRD has played a key role in placing the issue of Roma people high up on the city’s agenda, when it agreed to finance the roads surrounding Belgrade’s Gazela Bridge, alongside the European Investment Bank, which financed the reconstruction of the crumbling bridge. The project included an important social component aimed at resettling and restoring the livelihoods of 175 Roma families that used to live under the bridge.

Police receive harassment complaints

Police in Norway have received 24 complaints regarding their handling of the homeless Rroma People, with an investigation now being launched into 10 of these.
Helle Gulseth is the leader of the Norwegian Bureau for the Investigation of Police Affairs' department for southern Norway.
She told VG, “We will conduct research regarding the other 14 , but we will not make any decisions until next week”.
Bjønnulv Evenrud, secretary of organisation Folk er folk (People are People) said that the complaints fell under three different conditions.
14 of the complaints related to the theft and removal of assets while the others related to wrongful expulsion and removal.
Mr Evenrud believes that not all of the complaints are targetted at individual police officers. He told VG, “A few things can be easily carried out by the rotten apples, but when you are hiring large vans in the middle of the night, it is coordinated. It is not then the individual police officer, but higher up [in the force.”
The saga of the some 200 Roma People, mostly from Bulgaria and Romania, began at the beginning period of this month after they were asked to leave the camp they had set up around Oslo’s Sofienberg church, seeking refuge from alleged police harassment.

NGO Advises Sofia Mayor against Demolishing Rroma Ghettos

The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC) has warned Sofia Mayor Yordnka Fandakova to abstain from demolishing Rroma ghettos at random because the move may breach the European Convention on Human Rights.
"Dwellings inhabited by Rroma families are to be treated as their "homes", as provided for in the ECHR, when they have been living there for many years. Their illegal status according to the domestic legislation makes no difference. Forcing the people out of their homes would constitute encroachment on their personal and family life, if they remain homeless," BHC Chair Krasimir Kanev says in an open letter to Fandakova.

PODGORICA - The fire that broke out Tuesday in a refugee camp in the Konik has burned about 30 huts, and the homeless left about 800 people. No one was killed or injured , the origin of the fire was probably negligence.
The place at which there were dilapidated barracks residents of refugee settlements in Vrela Ribnicka, several hours after the great fire, there was only dust and ashes. Literally everything is burned.Rare managed to save only identity documents, and many of the houses before the onslaught of fire just flown in that wherein they slept. On the spot we found the people who put out the remains of the fire, crying and worried faces of children and the apparent inability to get anything done.

A post-conflict country such as Bosnia, which goes through an utterly difficult transition, is extremely convenient for the proliferation of criminal activities. A country with an enormous and complicated state apparatus and a complex legislature has difficulties tackling even the simplest violations of the law. In such countries it is the weak and unprotected that most often suffer.

The series features groups like the Amish, the Roma (or Gypsies), religious groups who believe in the imminence of the Apocalypse, etc. The first installment of the nine-episode American Gypsies series aired on Tuesday 17 July and was as disappointingly trashy as its advertising.

A mother’s sobs echoed through a Parkdale church Sunday, as a community gathered to mourn 11-year-old Laszlo Balogh, killed last week in a horrific hit and run crash on Queen Elizabeth Way.
Her grief is only worsened by not being able to lay her son to rest.
The Hungarian Roma family is struggling with the decision of where to bury Laszlo, as they await results of their asylum claim.
“They don’t want to be sent back to Hungary and have the body of their son buried here,” said Gina Csanyi-Robah, director of the Roma Community Centre and organizer of the memorial.
The family has been living in Toronto for a year and a half. Their first asylum hearing was delayed, and relatives have already been rejected. The process could take up to three years, said Csanyi-Robah.
In the meantime, Laszlo’s body remains in the Hamilton General Hospital morgue, until the family can raise enough money to fly him back to Hungary to be buried.

Europe’s human rights at risk: Justice Commissioner must act
(Brussels, 18 July 2012) Following the European Commission’s declaration that 2013 will be the year of Europe’s people and their rights, Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding launched an online consultation on the obstacles people face in trying to exercise their rights. Amnesty International has criticised the absence of any reference to violations of key fundamental rights, and has released a summer petition for signature, which aims to press Mrs Reding to strengthen the role of human rights.
“Unless we can enjoy our statutory human rights, we’re also denied access to the very rights Mrs Reding has mentioned”, said Nicolas Beger, Director of Amnesty international’s European Institutions Office. “Despite the EU’s obligation to respect and promote human rights, it’s simply turning a blind eye to violations in EU countries.
The problem is a desperate lack of political will-power'', said Beger. “We want the Commission to use its existing powers boldly to tackle today’s defects and make a tangible difference for human rights in Europe.

URGENT ACTION! ROMANI FAMILIES DENIED THE RIGHT TO WATER

Five Romani families, including children who were forcibly evicted from Belgrade to the Nis, a city in southern Serbia, are being denied water, sanitation and electricity.
Five Romani families, 18 people including children and a pregnant woman, who later gave birth, were resettled to an abandoned warehouse in Daniciceva Street in Nis without access to water, sanitation or electricity. They have been without access to water for more 10 weeks since being forcibly evicted from Belgrade on 26 April. It is
currently summer in Serbia and day-time temperatures are regularly over 35 degrees Celsius.
