Rights Groups Sue Macedonian Minister For Homophobia

Four LGBT organizations and the Macedonian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights on Monday announced law suits against the minister for harassment and discrimination, after he said that only heterosexual couples can ensure a “healthy nation”.

A day earlier, Ristovski threatened to sue the same organizations for slander.

“I do not even want to discuss the issue of giving homosexual couples the right to adopt children”, as “children should be raised properly and grow and develop in a marriage with a mother and a father in a real and biological sense,” Ristovski said on Friday.

France: 13,000 signatures against the forced evictions of Roma discounts at Matignon

FRANCE ROMA DEMAND ACTION AFTER FIRE KILLS SEVERAL ROMA

26/05/2013 - The Roma are considered the most persecuted group in Europe, and they experience some of their worst mistreatment in France. Many Roma say President Francois Hollande’s antagonistic policies are both disappointing and dangerous.

After a deadly fire claimed the lives of at least three Roma in a slum outside the city of Lyon, nearly a thousand Roma and their supporters marched in Paris to demand an end to their social exclusion. But hostility towards the Roma is one of the few issues which unites both left and right politicians in France.

France continues to earn international condemnation for its belligerent policies towards the Roma. President Francois Hollande has openly continued the approach of conservative ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy, by demolishing camps and forced expulsion of thousands of Roma in order to intimidate and destabilize the community.

Roma living in Sapanca district of Sakarya (Marmara region, Turkey) continue to protest the decision of urban renewal in their neighborhood. Because they believe that the price which will be paid to them for their houses is too low. Almost 100 Roma blocked the road, from where the minister of economy Zafer Çağlayan had been planned to pass, for a short time to share their infelicity about the urban renewal with him. Houses of Roma families living in Gazipaşa neighborhood in Sapanca will be demolished in the context of urban renewal.

Spain slum evictions in Puerta de Hierro, Madrid

Traditionally, spring day or St. George’s day is celebrated by both Orthodox Christian and Muslim Roma people who organize picnics and outdoor events. This year the last day of St. George’s festivities coincided with the celebration of Europe Day on 9^th May. Due to rainy weather, the Association for development of Roma community – Sumnal (www.sumnal.org) decided to organize a Euro Cafè event in its offices instead of a picnic in the park.

8th International Roma Congress Gathered

International Romani Union organized 8th International Congress of Roma in Sibiu Romania in 2013, April 7-8. The new administration of the union is selected in the congress to where the participants from 35 different countries participated. The president of the administration which is elected for a term of four years became Cioaba Florin.

International Romani Union which has a consultancy status in UN anounced that trust, transpareceny and participation are among their main principles. Roma 3 dead in fire at a squat in Lyon. Response Valls continued evictions

After the death of three people in a fire at their squat in Lyon, the interior minister was there to "express his sorrow" but more importantly, to reaffirm its policy towards Roma, "continue the work of dismantling and evacuation camps. "

The excuse was more or less the same like other regions of the country. The residents talk about a number of small-robberies in their area which is increased lately. The residents together with the Nazis set the half of the Roma people tents on fire. The local police didn’t show up during the pogrom incident.

Macedonian Police Target Roma with Excessive Force

Budapest, Skopje, 13 May 2013: 

The ERRC is deeply concerned about media reports which indicate that a special police unit, along with the regular police force, used excessive and arbitrary force when they entered a Roma neighbourhood to arrest a man who had committed a crime while on leave from prison. Around 50 police officers used force against Roma on 5 May, indiscriminately targeting individuals, including women, in the course of the operation.

Roma from the Topana neighbourhood told the ERRC that officers forcibly entered several Romani houses and local shops without providing any explanation; harassing and pushing people, often in the presence of children. Roma reported that police officers kicked and punched them with fists and police batons. Around ten Romani individuals were beaten up, including three women. 

Declaration of Roma Interparliamentary Organization

Belgrade, 07/05/2013 - The first meeting of the Roma Interparliamentary Organization, held on Tuesday, resulted in the signing of a declaration.

It defined the goals of the organization towards full inclusion of the Roma in all aspects of social life.

The declaration was signed at the Serbian parliament in Belgrade by Roma parliament members from Serbia, Macedonia, Slovakia, Croatia and Bulgaria, while the creation of the document also included Roma MPs from Romania.

Newspapers blame ethnic group for trouble, says report

 

Milan, 07/05/2013 - Media reports show only the negative side of Roma and Sinti in Italy, according to a survey of newspaper articles released Tuesday. The survey by Naga, which often focuses on health care services for foreigners, found that "discriminatory statements" were made in 37.2% of articles studied. Another 32.3% of articles differentiated between "us" - meaning Italians - and "them," referring to Roma and Sinti, said Naga, a non-profit organization working for better treatment of foreigners in Italy. For 10 months, beginning last June, Naga followed numerous newspapers, including local and national journals including Il Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, La Stampa, Il Sole 24 Ore, Il Giornale, Libero, La Padania, and La Prealpina. The survey suggested that some newspaper reports on negative events made reference to Roma people even when they were not directly involved in the story. Naga called on the Italian media to improve its work. The press "can be not only a tool of exclusion, but also of knowledge and approach," said Naga president Cinzia Colombo.

Live from a Paris apartment, the first Roma TV station

Andrijano Dzeladin, founder of Sutka City TV - the first Roma TV channel, is an extremely proud man these days and he rarely misses an opportunity to explain the reason for this sense of self-satisfaction. "This is the first TV in the world for the Roma people. I put everything I had, all my savings, into it," said Dzeladin, breaking into a face-splitting grin in his Paris office.

The idea to launch Sutka City TV dates back to 2010, when Dzeladin was listening to a French radio show on the expulsion of a Roma community from a shantytown in France. “I called the radio show. I wanted to say that the Roma are not like that,” recounted Dzeladin.

The radio host, well-known French journalist, Jean-Jacques Bourdin, put his caller on air on RMC radio and Dzeladin found himself publicly declaring, “I want to show you our true face.”

Census of forced evictions from settlements of migrant Roma in France, 2013 first quarter - Joint Press release 9 April 2013

In the report "Census of forced evictions from settlements of migrant Roma in France" Philippe Goossens, AEDH Board member in charge of discrimination and minority rights (including rights of Roma), compiled the figures of Roma forced evictions in France during the first quarter of 2013. Across all regions, more than 4,000 people have been evicted from their settlements without any alternative housing. The European Association for the Defence of Human Rights (AEDH) and the French League for Human Rights (LDH) condemn this situation and call on the French government to change its policy towards Roma.

Ederlezi, which is celebrated by many Balkan and Central Asian peoples but particularly embraced by Roma, is celebrated in İstanbul with a great enthusiasm. The celebrations in Ahırkapı, Kuştepe and Büyükçekmece were either traditional and modern. The famous Roma singer Kibariye was guest artist in the activity organized by Büyükçekmece municipality for Ederlezi and mother's day. Local Roma community leaving in the district participated to the activity. Roma residents of Kuştepe were too crowded in the activity in which famous Roma singers Orhan Esen, Kobra Murat ve Tarık Mengüç performed.  Roma from the other Roma districts also participated to the activity which was organized by Kuştepe Roma Flower Seller Association. The enthusiasm of the residents and university students remarked the celebrations in Ahırkapı similar to the celebrations of last year.The residents said that they are so happy with the support of university students. Ederlezi, which ise celebrated as the starting point of warm seasons, has a special meaning for Roma. According to a very ancient Roma legend, which is almost forgotten, the great king who provide peace and unity for Roma were lost in near waterfront in Ederlezi. He will turn back in an other Ederlezi and provide peace and unity for Roma again.

MEFAIL AND ROBERT SAKIP THE ROMA MUSICIAN FROM MACEDONIA

 Mefail SAKIP - MEFO was born on 17/06/1950 - 08/02/2011 in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia.

He is coming from a Roma musician family, where his father from early childhood started to teach him to play in different string instruments as Mandolin and Macedonian instrument called Tambura. 

He was enrolled in the Secondary Musical School “Ilija Nikolovski Luj “, Skopje in the instrumental department for Violin.

During his schooling he was also active in different youth folklore assemblies and associations as “Orce Nikolov “, Koco Racin”, ”Vlado Tasevski”, Kosta Abrasevik” and “Tanec” where the Macedonian traditional ethno music and folklore was cherished.

Mefail SAKIP - MEFO in 1967 with his 17 years was employed in the Macedonian Radio Television (MRTV), where he started his professional engagement as a professional musician and artist as solo instrumentalist and First Tambura in the Orchestra for Traditional Instruments (OTI) under Mr. Pece Atanasovski.

Its  a traditional Romani ( neighborhood celebration announcing the end of the cold indoor season and the beginning of the warmer season of movement and outdoor life. Survival from the winter and the seasonal renewal of life is celebrated at Herdeljezi through the sharing of music, dance, food and community especially celebrated by Roma people in the Balkans, Turkey and elsewhere around the world. This holiday celebrates the return of springtime. Ederlezi is the Romani name for the Bulgarian, Macedonian and Serbian Feast of Saint George. It's celebrated on 6 May (occurring approximately 40 days after the spring equinox). The various Balkan spellings (Herdeljez, Erdelezi) are variants of the Turkish Hıdırellez, a holiday signaling the beginning of spring, occurring on the same day.

ERRC SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR THE 2013 ROMA RIGHTS SUMMER SCHOOL

The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) invites applications for its highly acclaimed annual Roma Rights Summer School. The Summer School will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from 21 July - 1 August 2013. Deadline for applications: 12 May 2013. The 10-day Summer School is intended for young activists and students of Romani origin from all European countries.1 The Summer School will offer both an introduction to human rights as well as an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas, innovation and expertise for participants who are at an early stage of their careers. The Summer School provides participants a unique chance to immerse themselves into the theory and practice of human rights, minority rights and non-discrimination, and to benefit from the knowledge and experience of committed human rights experts. This intensive programme includes a variety of social activities that allow participants to network with each other and the experts, ensuring the programme is instructive and enjoyable.

Research that deals with the discrimination, marginalization and persecution of Roma and Resande/Travelers is an expanding but rather new discipline. There are a few exceptions from the late 1960s and early 1970s, both internationally and in Sweden, but broadly speaking, systematic research was not introduced until the late 1980s.

REF Scholarship Program seeks to recruit new members to its National Selection Board of RMUSP

The Roma Education Fund announces its call for applications for National Selection Board members within the Roma Memorial University Scholarship Program (RMUSP) and Law and Humanities Program (LHP), who will participate in the evaluation and selection of scholarship beneficiaries for the Program in one of the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey, and Ukraine. 

The candidates for National Selection Board must hold a Master, or a Doctorate, or an equivalent degree and be affiliated with academic institutions, or being employees of government and local administration, or working in NGOs involved in supporting the Roma community. REF SP also encourages candidacy from its REF Alumni (former beneficiaries), provided they do not receive support from Scholarship Program during the term of membership. 

                               End of the Road for Italy’s Illegal State of Emergency

Budapest, Rome, 2 May 2013: Italy’s highest court has upheld the ruling which declared the ‘Nomad State of Emergency’ unfounded, unmotivated and unlawful. The Cassation Court rejected the government’s appeal against the Council of State’s decision from November 2011.

The European Roma Rights Centre and a Romani family first launched a legal challenge to Italy’s highly controversial State of Emergency in 2008. The Cassation Court's decision marks the final stage of the legal proceedings at the Italian courts, and marks the government’s last opportunity to appeal the Council of State's earlier decision. The decision was made following a hearing on 26 March.

Brussels: Romani women critique Czech town’s social inclusion program

Jakub Dürr, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the European Union, received a visit in Brussels on 9 April 2013 from Romani women activists and NGO representatives from the Czech Republic. The meeting was attended by Romani activists Elena Gorolová, Iveta Horváthová, Ivanka Mariposa Čonková and Gabriela Hrabaňová. Among other matters, the women criticized the Social Inclusion Program of the municipality of Ostrava, which is slated for EU financial support.

"The meeting at the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the European Union was arranged by Amnesty International and the ERGO Network. Those organizations wanted to show the Romani women activists in more detail what the work of authorities in Brussels is about,” Hrabaňová told news server Romea.cz.
